Press Release- VEDP

Washington County enjoys a stable economy and business environment. Sales tax revenues continue to climb, we have maintained low taxes, and still manage to provide increased services to our citizens. We have noted increased population growth unlike many areas of the region. We are one, of only a handful of localities in Virginia, that have neither a BPOL tax nor a merchants capital tax. Taxes collection rates remain well above the state average.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2003, revenues from government funds totaled $41.3 million. Property tax revenues, the County's largest source, were $21.4 million, an increase of $0.6 million over the prior year. This increase resulted from new construction in the county. Other local taxes (including sales taxes, recordation taxes, and meals taxes were $7.9 million, an increase of $0.5 million over FY2002.
